food as medicineTraditional Chinese Medicine uses the properties of foods, their effects on health and the therapeutic use of foods in the preservation of health and the prevention and treatment of disease.

The theory of Chinese food therapy is based in the Daoist symbol of yin and yang and the five elements.

The body is in constant motion, like nature, and can be symbolized by the yin yang symbol. A balance of yin and yang energy results in health and an imbalance leads to disease. Foods can be divided into two categories based on yin and yang theory. Dietary therapy is aimed to restore balance by modifying and using different foods.

Everything in the universe consists of the five elements, fire, earth, metal, water and wood. These five elements are subdivisions of yin and yang. Each element has a corresponding flavor, sound, season, color, direction, and weather condition.

The human body is an organic whole, and the body and its natural environment also form an organic whole. When dietary therapy is conducted, the interactions between the body and environment are harmonized. Traditional Chinese Medicine food therapy selects foods based on a diagnosis, adapting to each individual’s constitution, regulating yin and yang, coordinating the internal organs and adapting to climate and regional variation.

A consultation with Licensed Acupuncturist, Kerry Jenni, provides a guideline for correct eating according your individual constitution and to the principles of Chinese Medicine.
